電子紙顯示器利用顆粒電泳原理,通過帶電物質對電場的響應產生的運動實現色彩交替顯示。電子紙作為顯示器件,與陰極射線管顯示器、液晶顯示器和薄膜電致發光平板顯示器相比,最突出的優勢是省電節能,不需背景光源,圖像可以無源維持,只有畫面改變時耗電,耗電量可比LCD減少90%;電子紙可以迴圈使用,顯示內容可以根據需要不斷更新;另外電子紙對比度好、可視角度大、易讀。
