陰離子表面活性劑有良好的乳化性能和分散油的能力，水溶性和耐酸耐鈣、鎂鹽性比硫酸化物稍差，但在酸性溶液中不易水解。


在藥劑學上可與一些高分子陽離子藥物產生沉澱，對粘膜有一定刺激性，用作外用軟膏的乳化劑，也用於片劑等固體製劑的潤濕或增溶。
